Ubuntu on the Sony VAIO VGN-FS series of laptops

  • Welcome to Ubuntu-FS..

I'm currently trying to get my VGN-FS251E working perfectly with Ubuntu GNU/Linux. I thought that it might be easier for others facing the same problem, if I document all of the useful info that I find. I also thought that it would be a good way to give something back to the GNU/Linux community.

My Stuff

Home Arcade Machine

Arcade

The machine is a home sized cabinet that’s just big enough for two people to play comfortably and is weighted on the bottom to stop it from moving around. The cabinet originally had only 4 buttons per player but has since been upgraded to 6 buttons per player by adding an extra button connector inside.

The cabinet houses a 4 slot Neo-Geo MVS motherboard (MV-4F PCB) which has also been modified by adding a pause switch. As it was originally designed and built for Neo-Geo it will run most Jamma games fine, although some of the newer games may have some problems (Jamma+ games). These problems show themselves as graphical or sound errors usually and can be corrected by building a cheap Jamma converter which sits between the game board and machine and re-wires it without causing damage to either one.

The cabinet is in good shape to look at but could use some minor repair on closer inspection. The bottom left of the cabinet was banged whilst moving it into my house years ago but the right side is fine.

The control panel still needs a little work. I didn’t have the correct tools at hand when adding the extra buttons, so I kinda bodged it. It actually turned out a lot better than I thought it would though, as the new buttons are lined up correctly and they don’t move about at all. As you can see by the photo below, it just looks a little messy when you view it close up. Thankfully it’s all flush with the rest of the control panel and you don’t catch your hands on it while playing. That’s why I haven’t got around to using filler on it yet ;)

The monitor is in pretty good shape. It has slight shimmering at the bottom which would be easily fixed with a cap kit (replacing the capacitors on the monitors motherboard) and the glass screen itself has very minor screen burn at the top. The screen burn can only just be seen when the monitors turned off and is pretty much invisible when it’s turned on so it doesn’t interfere with game play at all. It’s one of the most popular makes of monitor which are well known for being of excellent quality and good build so finding parts for it is easy.

The speakers were taken out and replaced with Panasonic car speakers, which give a much clearer sound than the cabinets original one’s.

Neo-Geo Games

The King Of Fighters ‘97

This is the favourite King of Fighters game for a lot of people. It has enough characters and special moves to keep the battle interesting and tons of stuff happening in the background that makes it a pleasure to watch, even when your not playing yourself.

League Bowling

If your looking for a fun game to play with your friends, then look no further than League Bowling.

Puzzle De Pon!

Classic game of matching the coloured balls to blow them up within the set mount of time. Easily the most addictive of all the games in the collection.

Wind Jammers

Probably the most fun out of all the games. You can think of it as a really updated version of Pong with added power moves and mini games in-between matches. Good game to play against the computer, but even better to play against a friend.

Magician Lord

The rarest of all the games in the collection.

Jamma Games

Street Fighter 2 – Championship Edition

Still hailed as being the best version of the original Street Fighter series and rightly so too. It gives you everything that the original did + you can play as the bosses yourself.

This is a bootleg board and isn’t fully Jamma compatible (needs a converter building), hence the small graphical errors in the photograph (thin verticle bars down the screen). Luckily this doesn’t ruin the game in the slightest and the board can also be easily modified to run different versions of the game (Redwave, Rainbow Edition Etc.).

Captain America And The Avengers

Multi-player beat’em up game with fun game play but half assed dialogue ;)

M.I.A. – Missing In Action

M.I.A. Missing In Action is an old skool platform game.

The Combatribes

The Combatribes is a classic beat’em up in the style of Double Dragon.

Tekken 2
